How to treat Chlamydia

Chlamydia is the most frequent STI (sexually transmitted infection) in the UK with a high proportion of infected individuals namely adolescents. However has also been reported in older people and a disproportionate increased in those over 40 years.

Many Chlamydia patients are asymptomatic (experience no symptoms). Research has shown that 50% of men, and between 70 to 80% of women, have no symptoms. Symptoms may occasionally present for a short period then disappear. However the absence of symptoms does not mean you are no longer infected. You may infect others and begin the cycle of re-infection. Symptoms of Chlamydia usually manifest between 1 to 3 weeks after exposure, but it may take more time to become evident.

Undiagnosed Chlamydia cases with a lack of symptoms can become serious when if is not treated in time. The risks of Chlamydia include:

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
  • Epididymo-orchitis (inflammation of the testicles).
  • Infertility.
  • Reactive arthritis (rarely occurs).

There is also the danger of passing on an undiagnosed STI to other people and a cycle of re-infection a risk.

Causes of Chlamydia

Chlamydia is caused by the bacteria Chlamydia Trachomatis. This STI is contracted by the exchange of sexual body fluids (semen, vaginal fluids) of an infected person.

  • Unprotected vaginal, oral, or anal sex with an infected person.
  • Sharing of sex toys.
  • Your genitals coming into contact with your partner's genitals (even if there's no ejaculation, orgasm, or penetration).

FAQ's

The test procedure for Chlamydia is fast, pain-free, and straight forward. A sample of your cells will be needed for testing. A swab may be taken of your genital area or alternatively we will ask for a urine sample from you in a bottle which we will provide. Prior to your appointment it is important to not pass urine for at least 2 hours as this will help with achieving the most accurate result.

Chlamydia symptoms usually present at 1 to 3 weeks after exposure therefore the time for testing is 2 weeks from when you believe you have been infected to guarantee an accurate result. Should you be experiencing symptoms, or if your partner has been diagnosed, prompt testing is recommended. Adolescents below 25 years have a greater probability of infection so it is recommended, if you fall within this age range, that you should go for testing yearly, especially if you have multiple or a new sexual partner.

Your results will be available within 24 hours or on the next working day.
