Ureaplasma is very rare and if all other STIs have been ruled out only then is a test to determine if you have it is done.

Transmission of Ureaplasma

The bacteria are usually transmitted via three known modes of infection. However, it also has unknown transmission.

  1. Sexual intercourse with an infected individual. People with multiple sexual partners are more at risk of the disease.
  1. An unborn baby may catch the infection if the mother is infected.

It is important to note that people who are not sexually active can also be infected.

Symptoms of Ureaplasma

  • If Ureaplasma is suspected the infection and symptoms experienced include:
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain and/or discomfort to the genitalia.
  • Stillbirths, premature births, and miscarriages have been reported when this bacteria has been found. Newborns may have difficulty in breathing, meningitis, and pneumonia.
  • Having treatment does resolve symptoms and reduce complications in women during pregnancy.
  • It has been found to be the major cause of infertility in men and women.

What's the diagnosis and treatment of Ureaplasma?

  • To help the doctor identify the presence of Ureaplasma, they will either swab the vagina, urethra, uterine lining, or test a sample of your urine.
  • Ureaplasma is treated with antibiotics however not all antibiotics control the bacteria.
  • Antibiotics do lower the risk for newborns. Ureaplasma can result in premature rupture of the membranes in pregnant women, and treatments using azithromycin, clarithromycin, or erythromycin are the preferred treatments recommended.

Prevention of Ureaplasma

  • Ureaplasma will sometimes appear when illness or stress weakens the immune system. It is also advised that having multiple sexual partners does increase you risk of an STI.
